I open my eyes…feeling like I have been asleep for years. Rolling over onto my side I see that you are still asleep. I smile for a moment as I hear you sigh in your sleep…wondering if the dreams will keep you smiling. The lights from the streets outside tell me that night is still claiming the world I am in. I sit up in the bed slowly as not to wake you, you need your rest. Slowly I rise from the bed…dressing myself for the day ahead of me…or should I say the night before me. The screams in the distance echo long into the night, a scream that signals their dinner. I throw on my trench coat and steady my breathing, keeping my eyes closed as I calm myself…I am ready. Walking back to the bed I lean down and place a soft kiss at your cheek…wishing I could stay here forever by your side. “I shall miss you my love,” I say as I walk out the door. “I know,” you whisper softly as the door shuts behind me. Tears that I cannot see but you shed into your pillow…I feel them…and I’m sorry.
